It’s not about showing up on set and doing a smokey eye look, it’s so much more deeper. Daniel Bauer Academy students learn to create and tell a story using makeup in precise and unique ways. Students choose different concepts to work on, they are taught to research while keeping in mind what industry they are from, create mood boards, do a lot of referencing, trails, etc, to actually narrow down their final looks for their shoot.

Makeup is used to tell a story, makeup in itself isn’t the story. The creative process is guided by the story the team wants to create and everything in the team is bringing their unique ‘ingredient’, be it from the model, the photographer, set design, styling, makeup and hair. When Daniel Bauer started his journey in India, he was living with some friends in Mumbai – a photographer form Germany, a stylist from Italy and a model from Australia. One evening, they were all out for drinks and decided to create a beauty story the following morning, it was all about foreigners in the city. They wanted to create their interpretation of classic Mumbai street life, from drinking chai, to a visit to a barber shop, to greeting a Holy Cow (Guy). It was raw, fresh, exciting. They were doing the makeup and hair in a taxi travelling from location to location. This experience got him hooked on life in Mumbai. This is something Daniel always wants to instil in his students, that anything is possible with the right team and focus.

It’s never easy, the whole portfolio shoot process at the Daniel Bauer Academy, for their students. But all the students realise why it is the way it is when they see the outcome of what went on durning the entire process of building their editorial portfolio.

Post Covid, there has been a huge appetite for makeup and pushing the boundaries of what is possible, makeup artists and makeup enthusiasts are now more fearless and boundless than any other generation of artist. It’s incredible to see and witness this. Instagram makes the makeup community truly global. This inspires us to push our students more because truly, sky is the limit when it comes to letting our kids unleash their creative souls.
